“We wanted to inject some art into the entire city. The first way we did this was through a project called ‘Art and Ale’ where we put work made by local artists up for sale in a Wakefield pub. It was so amazing watching people who wouldn’t ever think of going to a gallery really engaging with the exhibition, talking about it over a drink and actually buying the work. Since then we’ve been committed to this idea that we can get the work of local people, and show it in interesting places, where art wouldn’t normally be shown. The makers get exposure, a wider cross section of people engage with it and Wakefield becomes a more interesting place in the process.”
